ISO 9001:2015 Certification — Is It Worth It for Your Business?

Meera Shah March 5, 2025 7 min read

Discover how ISO 9001 certification can improve your business processes, boost credibility, and open government tender opportunities.

ISO 9001:2015 is the international standard for quality management systems. For Indian MSMEs the honest answer to 'is it worth it' depends almost entirely on who your customers are — and on whether you treat it as a document exercise or an operating discipline.

When it clearly pays for itself

  • You bid for government or PSU tenders where ISO 9001 is a stated qualification criterion
  • You supply to large corporates or OEMs with vendor qualification requirements
  • You export, particularly to European and Japanese buyers
  • You are scaling past the point where the founder can personally check every output

When it is probably premature

If you are a pre-revenue startup, a pure B2C business, or a services firm whose clients have never once asked about it, certification is cost without return. The certificate does not market itself — it removes an objection, and only where that objection exists.

What the standard actually requires

  • A defined quality policy and measurable quality objectives
  • Documented processes covering your core value chain
  • Risk-based thinking — identifying what could go wrong and planning for it
  • Internal audits carried out at planned intervals
  • Management review meetings with recorded decisions
  • Corrective action procedures with root cause analysis
  • Evidence of continual improvement over time

The certification path

  1. Gap analysis against the standard's clauses
  2. Documentation — quality manual, procedures, work instructions, forms
  3. Implementation and staff training, typically over two to three months
  4. Internal audit and management review
  5. Stage 1 audit by the certification body — documentation review
  6. Stage 2 audit — on-site verification of implementation
  7. Certificate issued, valid three years with annual surveillance audits

One thing to check before you pay

Make sure your certification body is accredited — under NABCB in India, or an IAF member body internationally. Unaccredited certificates are cheap and widely sold, and they are routinely rejected during tender scrutiny and corporate vendor audits, which defeats the entire purpose. Ask for the accreditation mark and verify it independently before signing.

MSMEs should also check the MSME certification reimbursement scheme, which refunds a substantial portion of certification cost for registered units.
